How many attempts you actually get, exam by exam

Eligibility Updated · 7 min read

“How many attempts do I get?” sounds like one question with one answer. It is actually three different questions, because the exams answer it in three incompatible ways — and two of the biggest ones do not answer it at all.

The short version

ExamGeneral / EWSOBCSC / STReal constraint
UPSC Civil Services69No limitAttempts, then age
SSC (CGL, CHSL, MTS, GD)No attempt limitAge only
IBPS PO / ClerkNo attempt limitAge only
SBI PO47No limitAttempts, then age
RRB (NTPC, Group D, ALP)No attempt limitAge only

PwBD candidates get further relaxation on both attempts and age in the exams that cap them; the exact figure depends on the disability category and the notification. As always, the current notification is the authority.

Why SSC not capping attempts matters more than UPSC capping them

Most advice about attempt limits is written about UPSC, because UPSC is where the limit bites. That leaves a false impression that every exam works that way, and it changes how people plan.

For SSC, IBPS and the railways, the binding constraint is not attempts, it is the calendar. A General-category candidate with an upper limit of 30 and a birthday in March has roughly as many attempts as there are cycles before their last eligible crucial date — which is a number they can work out exactly, and which nobody is counting on their behalf.

That reframes the planning question. It is not “how many chances do I have left”, it is “how many cycles fit before the age window closes”, and the answer depends on the crucial date rather than today's date. That distinction is worth understanding on its own — see why your age on the form is not your age today.

What actually counts as an attempt

For UPSC, an attempt is counted when you appear in at least one paper of the Preliminary examination. Three things follow, and each one surprises somebody every year:

  • Filling the form and not sitting the exam does not count.
  • Sitting Paper I and walking out before Paper II does count.
  • Being disqualified later does not un-count an attempt you appeared for.

SBI PO counts appearance in the preliminary stage the same way. Where no cap exists, the question is moot — nobody is keeping score.

The comparison people actually need: IBPS PO vs SBI PO

These two are treated as interchangeable in most guides, and on attempts they are not. IBPS PO has no attempt limit; SBI PO gives a General-category candidate four. Somebody who assumes bank exams work like SSC can burn their SBI attempts on cycles they were not seriously prepared for, and discover the cap only when it is reached.

If both are on your list, the practical order is usually to treat SBI PO as the scarce resource and IBPS PO as the renewable one. Our SSC CGL vs IBPS PO comparison covers the rest of that decision — pay, posting, and what the job is actually like.

Where attempts get spent without anyone noticing

Sitting an exam “just for the experience” is sound advice for SSC and terrible advice for UPSC, and the same person will hear it given for both. Where nothing is counted, a practice run costs a Sunday. Where attempts are capped, it costs one of six.

A subtler drain is the category you cannot currently prove. An OBC candidate whose non-creamy-layer certificate has lapsed is treated as General for that cycle, which moves the attempt cap and the age limit together. NCL certificates are typically valid for a financial year, so the version that worked last cycle is often not the version that will be accepted this one.

And the two concessions get conflated. Attempts and age relaxation are granted to broadly the same categories, which makes them feel like one benefit, but having attempts left does not extend an age limit and being inside the age limit does not give back a spent attempt.

How many cycles do you have left?

For the exams where age is the real limit, that is the number worth knowing. Enter your date of birth and category and see which exams you are still eligible for, computed on each one's own crucial date.

Frequently asked

How many attempts are allowed in SSC CGL?
SSC does not set a maximum number of attempts for CGL or any of its other examinations. You can appear in every cycle for which you meet the educational qualification and remain inside the age limit, so the age window is the real constraint.
Does filling the UPSC form count as an attempt?
No. An attempt is counted only when you appear in at least one paper of the Preliminary examination. Registering and not attending does not count; attending Paper I and leaving before Paper II does.
Do IBPS PO and SBI PO have the same attempt limit?
No, and it is a common assumption. IBPS PO has no attempt limit within the age window. SBI PO limits General-category candidates to four attempts, with more for OBC and no limit for SC/ST.
Does age relaxation give me extra attempts?
Not directly. Attempt limits and age relaxation are separate concessions that happen to be granted to the same categories. A higher attempt cap for OBC candidates comes from the attempt rule, not from the three-year age relaxation.
