State government jobs and State PSC exams in 2026
25 state-level recruitments are in our catalogue, carrying
607 vacancies. They are the most overlooked route into
administration in India, and the reason is simple arithmetic: UPSC CSE closes at
32 for a General candidate, while BPSC runs to 37, UPPSC and RPSC to 40,
and MPPSC to 40. A candidate who has aged out of the national exam often
has five to eight years of state attempts left.
The posts are not consolation prizes either. A Deputy Collector or Deputy SP
enters at the same pay level as an IPS probationer and holds real district
authority from the first posting.
Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

Domicile decides more than eligibility
Every state commission admits candidates from outside the state. What outside candidates do not get is the part that matters: reservation, the state's age relaxation, and the reduced fee. An outside candidate competes against the unreserved cutoff with the unreserved age limit.
Domicile is also not the same as an address. It is a certificate issued by the state, and the qualifying conditions — years of residence, place of birth, parents' domicile — differ between states. If you have lived in a state for three years without obtaining the certificate, you hold no domicile benefit at all. Apply for it before the notification, not after.
The language paper is where outside candidates fail
Most state mains carry a compulsory regional language paper, and it is qualifying rather than scored — which means it cannot be compensated for, only passed or failed.
- MPSC Rajyaseva — a compulsory Marathi paper. The single most common reason non-Marathi candidates are eliminated.
- UPPSC PCS — compulsory General Hindi, consistently underestimated by English-medium candidates.
- BPSC and MPPSC — General Hindi, qualifying.
If you are considering a state outside your own, treat the language paper as the first question rather than the last. It is a year of preparation, not a revision topic.
How much UPSC preparation transfers
At the preliminary stage, a great deal. The general studies syllabus overlaps closely, and a candidate preparing seriously for UPSC CSE can usually clear a state prelims without separate study.
At the mains, much less. Every state weights its own history, geography, economy and polity heavily, and that content simply is not in national material. RPSC is the most extreme case — Rajasthan-specific questions run through both stages. MPSC has moved its mains to a descriptive pattern aligned with UPSC, which improved transfer in both directions.
The practical approach most successful candidates use: prepare nationally for prelims, then add one state's specific content rather than three. Spreading across several states' mains material is how people clear no prelims at all.
Which state exam to attempt
Your own, in almost every case. The domicile benefits and the language paper together make an out-of-state attempt substantially harder for a marginal gain, and a candidate splitting attention across states usually ends with a thinner chance at each.
The exception worth considering is a candidate near the UPSC age ceiling with a state that runs longer. If you are 33 and your state's commission accepts applications to 40, that is seven more years of genuine attempts at a post with district authority — and no national exam offers that.
Frequently asked questions
Which State PSC exam has the highest age limit?
UPPSC PCS, RPSC RAS and MPPSC State Service all run to 40 for General candidates, with further relaxation for reserved categories of that state. BPSC runs to 37 for General men and 40 for General women.
Can I apply for a State PSC exam from another state?
Yes, but as an unreserved candidate. Reservation, the state's age relaxation and the reduced fee all follow domicile, so you compete against the General cutoff with the General age limit.
Does UPSC preparation cover State PSC exams?
It covers the preliminary stage well, since the general studies syllabus overlaps closely. It covers the mains poorly — every state weights its own history, geography and polity heavily, and most carry a compulsory regional language paper.
Is a State PSC job lower than a central government job?
Not in pay or authority at the officer level. A Deputy Collector or Deputy SP enters at the same pay level as an IPS probationer and holds real district authority. The difference is the posting is within one state rather than across India.
