Government jobs after ITI or diploma in 2026 — the technical route
This is the most underrated list on the site. 15 exams accept an ITI certificate
or an engineering diploma, together carrying 5,741 vacancies —
and the competition per post is a fraction of what a general graduate faces, because
the eligibility pool is limited to people who hold a specific technical qualification.
An ITI holder competing for RRB ALP is competing against other ITI holders in notified
trades. A B.A. graduate competing for SSC CGL is competing against every graduate in
India. The certificate is worth more than its reputation suggests.
Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

Your trade decides your list, not your certificate
This is the single thing candidates get wrong. "ITI pass" is not an eligibility condition anywhere. Every notification names specific trades, and holding a certificate in a trade that is not on the list makes you ineligible no matter how good your marks are.
Fitter, Electrician, Mechanic Diesel, Turner, Machinist and Wireman appear on almost every railway notification. Trades outside that core group appear irregularly and sometimes not at all. Before you commit a year to preparation, read the trade table in the notification itself, not a summary of it — this is the most common reason a technically eligible candidate is rejected at document verification.
A diploma in engineering is broader: it satisfies RRB JE and SSC JE requirements directly, and it also satisfies most posts that ask for ITI, which an ITI certificate does not do in reverse.
Junior Engineer is the ceiling worth aiming at
SSC JE and RRB JE sit at a materially higher pay level than the technician and assistant posts, and both accept a three-year diploma — a degree is not required. The age window runs to 32 and 33 respectively, which is unusually generous.
Candidates with a diploma routinely apply only for the technician grades because they assume JE needs a B.Tech. It does not. If you hold a diploma in Civil, Mechanical or Electrical engineering, JE is the post to build the year around, and the technician exams are the fallback rather than the target.
If you hold a B.Tech, you are eligible for both lists
An engineering degree satisfies every diploma-level requirement as well as every general-graduate requirement. That means a B.Tech holder can sit RRB JE, SSC JE, SSC CGL, IBPS PO and the State PSCs — the widest eligibility of any qualification in the system.
The free check knows this: select "B.E / B.Tech" and it will credit you with the diploma-level posts too, which a simple ranking of qualifications gets wrong.
Apprenticeship is not a job, and that is fine
Railway and PSU apprenticeships recruit heavily from this qualification pool and are often mistaken for permanent recruitment. They are fixed-term training positions with a stipend, and they do not convert automatically into a post.
They are still worth taking if you are early and have nothing else running, because the practical experience counts in later technical selections. Just do not stop applying for permanent posts during it, which is what most apprentices do.
Frequently asked questions
Which ITI trades are accepted for RRB ALP?
The notification lists them explicitly and the list changes between CENs. Fitter, Electrician, Mechanic Diesel, Turner, Machinist and Wireman appear consistently. Always confirm against the trade table in the notification itself — a certificate in a trade that is not listed makes you ineligible.
Can a diploma holder apply for Junior Engineer?
Yes. SSC JE and RRB JE both accept a three-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline. A B.Tech is not required, and many diploma holders skip JE on the mistaken belief that it is.
Is ITI better than 12th for government jobs?
For technical recruitment, clearly yes — the ITI list is longer and the competition per post is lower. For general posts like SSC CHSL, a Class 12 certificate is what is asked for, and ITI does not substitute for it.
Does a B.Tech count as a diploma for these exams?
Yes. An engineering degree satisfies diploma-level requirements, so a B.Tech holder is eligible for this list as well as the graduate list. The reverse is not true — a diploma does not satisfy a degree requirement.
