Government jobs in Maharashtra 2026 — exams, age limits and domicile rules
Maharashtra changed its administrative exam in a way that reset who succeeds at
it. MPSC moved the Rajyaseva mains to a descriptive pattern aligned with
UPSC, replacing the objective format. Candidates who had spent years
optimising for multiple-choice mains found their method no longer transferred,
and preparation now carries between MPSC and UPSC in both directions far more
cleanly than it used to.

Marathi is compulsory, and it is not negotiable
A Marathi language paper is compulsory in the Rajyaseva mains. This is the single most common reason non-Marathi candidates are eliminated, and holding Maharashtra domicile does not substitute for it — plenty of domiciled candidates studied in English or Hindi throughout and face the same paper.
It tests grammar, comprehension, translation and composition at a level that assumes schooling in the language. If you are considering Maharashtra from outside, treat this as the first question rather than a detail to handle later: it is a year of preparation, not a revision topic.
Check the pattern before you buy any material
Because the mains changed format, a large amount of MPSC preparation material still in circulation describes an exam that no longer exists. Books and courses built for the objective mains are not merely outdated — they train the wrong skill entirely, since a descriptive paper rewards structured argument rather than recognition.
Verify the pattern against the current notification before spending money. This is the most expensive mistake a new MPSC candidate can make.
The overlap with UPSC is now genuine
With the aligned pattern, a candidate preparing seriously for UPSC CSE is doing most of the work for MPSC's mains too, and the reverse holds. That makes running both realistic in a way it was not before — the marginal cost is Maharashtra's state-specific content plus the language paper, rather than a second exam technique.
Maharashtra also starts earlier than most: the minimum age is 19, the lowest of any administrative exam in this catalogue. A candidate who graduates at 20 can attempt immediately rather than waiting.
Domicile and the non-creamy-layer requirement
The Maharashtra domicile certificate is issued by the Tehsildar or the Sub-Divisional Officer, generally through the Aaple Sarkar portal. Reservation here also depends on a valid non-creamy-layer certificate for OBC candidates, issued in the state format and subject to an income condition that must be current for the year the notification names.
An expired non-creamy-layer certificate means you are assessed as open category — no reservation, no age relaxation. Renew before the closing date rather than before the exam.
Maharashtra's parallel reservations are a second, separate claim
Beyond the caste categories every state runs, Maharashtra operates a set of parallel (horizontal) reservations that cut across them: women, ex-servicemen, sportspersons, orphans, and — distinctively — project-affected and earthquake-affected persons, the families displaced by the state's irrigation projects and by the 1993 Latur earthquake.
Horizontal means the seat is counted inside your vertical category rather than added to it: a woman in the OBC category is selected against the seats reserved for women within OBC, not against a separate pool. The practical consequence is that each parallel claim needs its own certificate, in the state's own format, and claiming one at the document-verification stage without having declared it in the application form does not work. Decide what you are claiming before you submit, because the form is where the claim is made.
Read the notification's category list, not last year's
Maharashtra's category structure has moved more than most states', and the Maratha reservation in particular has been legislated, struck down and legislated again across recent cycles. Which categories exist, and what each is worth in seats and in age relaxation, is settled by the notification in front of you and not by what a coaching video said last year.
This is the one place where following someone else's advice is actively risky: a candidate applying under a category the current notification does not carry has their form rejected, and the fee is not returned. Open the advertisement, find the category table, and match it against the certificates you actually hold.
The computer certificate and the one-time profile
Most Maharashtra state posts require a computer-literacy certificate — MS-CIT or a government-recognised equivalent. It is usually allowed to be produced within a period after appointment rather than at the application stage, but it is a condition of confirmation, so a selected candidate without one is on a clock.
MPSC applications run through a one-time profile on the commission's portal: you build the profile once and every subsequent application is filled from it. That is convenient and it is also where errors become permanent — a wrong date of birth or category in the profile propagates into every form you submit afterwards. Check the profile carefully the first time, before there is an application riding on it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Marathi compulsory for MPSC Rajyaseva?
Yes. A Marathi language paper is compulsory in the mains and is the most common reason non-Marathi candidates are eliminated. Maharashtra domicile does not substitute for the language requirement.
Has the MPSC exam pattern changed?
Yes. The Rajyaseva mains moved to a descriptive pattern aligned with UPSC. Material built for the older objective mains trains the wrong skill — verify the pattern in the current notification before buying anything.
What is the minimum age for MPSC Rajyaseva?
19 years, the lowest of any administrative exam in this catalogue, with an upper limit of 38 for open-category candidates and relaxation for reserved categories of Maharashtra.
Does UPSC preparation help with MPSC now?
Considerably more than it used to. With the aligned descriptive pattern, serious UPSC preparation covers most of the MPSC mains — the additional work is Maharashtra-specific content and the Marathi paper.
What are Maharashtra's parallel reservations?
Reservations that cut across the caste categories rather than adding to them: women, ex-servicemen, sportspersons, orphans, and project-affected and earthquake-affected persons. Each needs its own certificate in the state format, and it has to be declared in the application form — a claim made for the first time at document verification is not accepted.
Is MS-CIT required for Maharashtra government jobs?
A computer-literacy certificate — MS-CIT or a recognised equivalent — is required for most state posts. It is generally allowed to be produced within a period after appointment rather than with the application, but it is a condition of confirmation, so it cannot be skipped.
