Government jobs after 12th pass in 2026 — the full list, with age limits
Class 12 roughly doubles what a Class 10 certificate opens: 12 exams in our
catalogue accept it, carrying 0 vacancies. It is also the
qualification with the widest spread in outcome — the same certificate gets you into
SSC CHSL as a data entry operator and into the National Defence Academy as an officer
cadet, and those are not comparable careers.

Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

Sit NDA if you are still 16, 17 or 18
This is the most time-sensitive advice on the site. UPSC NDA has an age window of 16½ to 19½ and it does not relax for any category. There is no second chance, no relaxation to argue for, and no equivalent route later — an officer's commission through NDA is available to you for about three years and then never again.
Most candidates in this window do not know it exists until it has shut. If you are in Class 12 now, or finished it in the last two years, check the date before you read further. Physics and Mathematics are required for the Air Force and Navy wings; the Army wing accepts any stream.
SSC CHSL or RRB NTPC — the choice most candidates get wrong
These two absorb most 12th-pass applicants, and candidates usually pick on syllabus overlap. The more useful difference is posting.
SSC CHSL puts you in a ministry office, usually in a city, usually at a desk. RRB NTPC puts you in the railways, which may mean a station in a district town, and may mean shift work. Neither is better. But a candidate who cannot relocate should know that before they spend a year preparing, not after they get the posting letter.
On numbers: NTPC recruits more people and has a wider age window (up to 33 against CHSL's 27). On competition, CHSL is harsher per post. If you are 28 and reading this, NTPC is open to you and CHSL is not, which settles the question without any of the above mattering.
Does your stream matter?
For almost everything on this list, no. SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, Bihar Police and the clerical posts accept any stream — arts, commerce or science are treated identically, and a candidate with 60% in arts is in exactly the same position as one with 60% in science.
The exceptions are narrow and specific: the NDA Air Force and Navy wings need Physics and Mathematics, and technical apprentice-style posts need science. If someone tells you a commerce stream blocks you from government jobs generally, they are wrong.
Is there a minimum percentage in 12th?
For every exam on this list, no. SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, Bihar Police Constable and the clerical posts ask for a pass certificate. A candidate at 48% and a candidate at 92% submit the same form and are treated identically from that point on, because selection is decided entirely by the exam score.
Nor does the answer change by category. Category affects your age limit and your application fee; it has never affected a marks requirement, because there is no marks requirement to affect. If a coaching advertisement tells you a general-category candidate needs 60% to apply, ask it which notification says so.
There is exactly one place on this site where your school marks decide anything, and it is the opposite case: India Post GDS has no written examination at all and builds its merit list from Class 10 marks. There, marks are the whole selection. Everywhere else they are a pass or fail line.
"High salary, no exam" — what that actually gets you
This is searched constantly, often with "for female" attached, so it is worth answering plainly: the combination does not exist. India Post GDS is the one genuine no-exam recruitment here, and it pays ₹10,000–₹29,380 as TRCA — a real job with a real merit list, and not a high salary. Every high-paying route on this page runs through an examination.
What does exist for women candidates is cost: SSC charges no application fee to women at all, in any category, and most state police recruitments do the same. That is a genuine advantage and it applies to the exams worth taking, not to a shortcut around them.
Should you take a degree alongside?
Yes, and through open university if the alternative is not doing it. The graduate list is more than twice as long as this one and contains every post with a serious promotion ceiling — SSC CGL, the bank PO exams, the State PSCs, UPSC.
A degree from IGNOU or a state open university is treated as equivalent to a regular degree by SSC, IBPS and UPSC, provided the university is UGC-recognised. Candidates talk themselves out of this constantly on the belief that a distance degree is "not counted". It is counted. Check the university's UGC recognition, not its reputation.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best government job after 12th?
For a 16–19 year old, UPSC NDA, because the window shuts permanently at 19½ and it leads to a commissioned officer's career. For everyone else, SSC CHSL or RRB NTPC on volume — NTPC if you are over 27, since CHSL's limit is 27.
Can a 12th pass candidate apply for SSC CGL?
No. SSC CGL needs a completed Bachelor's degree by the notification's cutoff date. SSC CHSL is the equivalent SSC exam at the 12th-pass level.
Is an arts or commerce stream a disadvantage?
Not for SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC, police constable or clerical posts, which treat all streams identically. It matters only for the NDA Air Force and Navy wings, which require Physics and Mathematics.
What is the minimum 12th percentage for government jobs?
There is no minimum percentage for any exam on this list — SSC CHSL, RRB NTPC and the police and clerical posts require a pass certificate and nothing more. It is the same for general and reserved categories; category changes your age limit and your fee, never a marks requirement.
Are there high salary government jobs after 12th without an exam?
No. India Post GDS is the only genuine no-exam recruitment here and it pays ₹10,000–₹29,380, selected on a merit list of Class 10 marks. Every well-paid route on this page — NDA, CHSL, NTPC — runs through a written examination. Women candidates do get one real concession: SSC charges them no application fee in any category.
Can I apply while waiting for my Class 12 result?
For UPSC NDA and CDS, yes — those notifications admit candidates awaiting a result. Most others require the certificate in hand by the closing date. The free check has a 'final year / result awaited' option that applies this rule per exam instead of guessing.
