Government jobs in Tamil Nadu 2026 — exams, age limits and domicile rules
Tamil Nadu has an age rule that exists in no other state, and it is the single
most valuable thing on this page. For a great many TNPSC posts there is
no upper age limit at all for candidates of the reserved
categories — SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC and BCM. The ceiling in the notification
applies to the "Others" column, meaning candidates who have not availed
reservation.

| Exam | Age limit | Born on or after | Qualification | Last date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TNPSC Group 1 | 21–33 | 2 July 1992 | Bachelor's degree in any discipline, plus Tamil study or a pass in the commission's Tamil eligibility test | To be announced |
| TNPSC Group 4 | 18–29 | 2 July 1996 | Pass in the SSLC (Class 10) public examination; the typist posts additionally require the government technical certificate in typewriting | To be announced |
The age rule that has no equivalent anywhere else
Everywhere else in India, a reserved category buys a candidate three, five or at most ten extra years. In Tamil Nadu, for most TNPSC recruitments, it removes the ceiling. A 45-year-old BC candidate can sit an examination that a 33-year-old in the "Others" column cannot.
This is worth acting on rather than admiring. Candidates who assumed they had aged out of state administrative service — in their late thirties, having given up on UPSC — are frequently still eligible here, and the assumption that Tamil Nadu works like the rest of the country is what stops them from checking. The exception is a set of posts with a statutory ceiling of their own, typically uniformed ones, which the notification lists separately.
The Tamil eligibility test applies to everyone
Appointment to Tamil Nadu government service requires that a candidate has studied Tamil, or else passes the Tamil eligibility test the commission conducts. There is no route around it, and it is a separate hurdle from the examination itself.
Alongside that, candidates who studied in Tamil medium receive a preference in appointment. It is not a token — it is applied at the selection stage and it changes outcomes at the margin, which is why the medium of instruction appears on the application form at all.
Group 4 is the largest recruitment most candidates ignore
TNPSC Group 4 fills Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Bill Collector and Typist posts, and it does so in numbers that dwarf the administrative exam. The qualification floor is school-level rather than a degree, so the eligible pool is enormous and the competition is real — but so is the volume.
For a candidate with a Class 10 or Class 12 certificate and no degree, Group 4 is the most substantial government opportunity in the state, and the typist posts additionally require the government technical certificate in typewriting, which is a qualification worth acquiring on its own terms.
Group 1 and what it actually recruits to
Group 1 is the administrative tier — Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner in the commercial taxes department, District Registrar. It runs prelims, mains and an interview, with the mains written descriptively.
Tamil Nadu allows the mains to be written in Tamil or in English, and the choice is genuinely free rather than nominal: papers written in Tamil are evaluated by examiners working in Tamil. Candidates educated in Tamil medium are not disadvantaged by writing in it.
Group 4 — VAO, जूनियर असिस्टेंट, बिल कलेक्टर, टाइपिस्ट — में पद प्रशासनिक परीक्षा से कहीं ज़्यादा होते हैं, और योग्यता स्कूल स्तर की है।
