Government jobs in Bihar 2026 — exams, age limits and domicile rules
Bihar runs two things that make it unusual among Indian states, and both work in
a candidate's favour. The first is the age ceiling: BPSC accepts
General male candidates to 37, General women to 40 and SC/ST candidates to 42 —
a window five years longer than UPSC CSE and among the widest in the country. The
second is volume: Bihar Police recruits constables in tens of
thousands at a time, which is more posts in one notification than most states
advertise in a year.

0 vacancies.
Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| BPSC CCE | 20–37 | 2 August 1988 | Bachelor's degree in any discipline | To be announced |
| Bihar Police Constable | 18–25 | 2 August 2000 | Class 12 pass | To be announced |
Bihar domicile, and what it actually gets you
A residential certificate is issued by the Circle Officer or the Sub-Divisional Officer, and in most districts it can be applied for through the RTPS (Right to Public Service) counter or portal. It is not the same as having a Bihar address, and candidates discover the difference at document verification rather than at application.
What it unlocks: reservation under Bihar's categories, the state's age relaxation, and the reduced examination fee. Without it you are assessed as an unreserved candidate against the General cutoff and the General age limit. Because Bihar's relaxations are unusually generous, the gap between holding the certificate and not holding it is larger here than in most states.
Bihar's category structure is not the central one
This trips up candidates who have only applied for central exams. Bihar operates Extremely Backward Class (EBC) as a separate category from Backward Class, and it maintains a distinct reservation for women of the backward classes. Neither exists in the central framework.
The practical consequence is that a candidate holding a central OBC-NCL certificate may be entitled to a different — sometimes better — category in a Bihar recruitment, and will get nothing at all if they present only the central certificate where the state format is required. Check which certificate the notification names before you apply, not after.
Bihar Police Constable is decided by running, not by studying
The single most misunderstood recruitment in the state. The written paper is qualifying at 30% and the score is then discarded. The merit list is built from the physical efficiency test, where the 1600 metre run carries the most weight.
Candidates routinely spend a year on the written syllabus and six weeks on running, then lose to someone who did the reverse. If you are preparing for this recruitment, the honest allocation is the other way round. Height and chest standards are separately pass-or-fail — measure yourself against the notification before committing the year, because no amount of training compensates for falling a centimetre short.
BPSC as a genuine second route after UPSC
The preliminary syllabus overlaps UPSC CSE closely enough that serious national preparation usually clears it without separate study. The mains does not overlap: Bihar's history, geography, economy and current affairs carry real weight, and General Hindi is a compulsory qualifying paper that English-medium candidates fail more often than they expect.
For a candidate at 32 who has run out of UPSC attempts, BPSC still offers five years and posts — SDM, DSP — with the same district authority. That is the strongest argument for the exam and it is rarely made clearly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a Bihar domicile certificate?
Apply to the Circle Officer or Sub-Divisional Officer, in most districts through the RTPS counter or portal. It requires proof of residence and is separate from simply having a Bihar address — without the certificate you receive no reservation, no state age relaxation and no fee concession.
What is the age limit for government jobs in Bihar?
BPSC accepts General male candidates to 37, General women to 40, and SC/ST candidates to 42. Bihar Police Constable runs 18 to 25 for General male candidates with category relaxation on top. Both are computed on the notification's own cutoff date, not today.
Is the Bihar Police written exam counted in the merit list?
No. It is qualifying at 30% and the score is discarded afterwards. The merit list comes from the physical efficiency test, which is why running practice matters more than additional written preparation.
Can candidates from other states apply for BPSC?
Yes, as unreserved candidates. Reservation, the state's age relaxation and the reduced fee all follow Bihar domicile, so an outside candidate competes against the General cutoff with the General age limit.
