The age limit for SSC CHSL 2026 is 18 to 27 years as on 01 Aug 2026. The date is the rule, not the exam day. Someone born 01 Aug 1998 is already 28 on that date and is out; born a day later they are 27, and they can apply.

Who should apply for SSC CHSL
Right for candidates with reasonable English and the discipline to practise typing daily from day one. If you are physically fit and under 23, SSC GD Constable has far more vacancies; if you are over 27, look at railways instead.
- The typing test is where most late-stage eliminations happen. Start practising on day one, not in the final month.
- DEO posts sit at Pay Level 4, materially higher than LDC and JSA at Level 2 — worth targeting.
- Only a pass in Class 12 is required. Your percentage does not matter for most posts.

What SSC CHSL is actually like
CHSL posts are clerical and data-entry roles in central ministries and departments. The work is genuinely routine: correspondence, file movement, data entry against a typing speed requirement that is tested and enforced. Candidates who expect investigative or field work are describing CGL, not CHSL.
What it offers instead is an early start. A candidate joining at 20 with a Class 12 certificate is inside the system with a pensionable post, and departmental examinations are open from there. Several senior officers in the ministries began at LDC. The typing test is where most otherwise-qualified candidates are eliminated — it is a speed threshold, not a scored paper, and it cannot be compensated for with a strong written score.
