What SSC GD Constable is actually like
GD Constable places you in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles or the NCB. That choice is not cosmetic: a BSF or ITBP posting can mean a border location at altitude with long separations from family, while CISF guards airports, metros and industrial installations in cities. Candidates rank preferences without reading what each force actually does and then discover it after allotment.
The physical standards eliminate more candidates than the written paper does, and the medical eliminates more than most expect — flat feet, knock knees and vision below the standard are all disqualifying regardless of everything else. Train for the run and get an honest medical opinion before spending a year on the syllabus. The age ceiling of 23 also means this is one of the first posts a candidate ages out of.
SSC GD Constable physical standards and physical test
All Constable (GD) posts across BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles, SSF and NCB.
| Male candidates | |
| Height | 170 cm (≈ 5 ft 7 in) |
| Chest | 80 cm, expanding at least 5 cm |
| 5 km race | 24 minutes |
| Female candidates | |
| Height | 157 cm (≈ 5 ft 2 in) |
| 1.6 km race | 8.5 minutes |
Relaxations. Reduced height and chest standards apply for Scheduled Tribes and for candidates from hill areas and specified regions; Ladakh region has its own race standard.
Measure yourself against these before committing a year of preparation. Height and chest are pass-or-fail — no amount of training compensates for falling short, and candidates discover it at the measurement stage after clearing every written paper. Confirm the current standard in the notification on ssc.gov.in.
