Government jobs in Gujarat 2026 — exams, age limits and domicile rules
Gujarat removed the interview from its lower-grade recruitment. For Class 3
posts, and for a range of non-gazetted selections, appointment is decided on
written marks alone — a policy adopted to take discretion out of hiring, and one
that changes how a candidate should allocate preparation time.

Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

No interview means the written paper is the whole contest
Where an interview exists, a candidate can be average on paper and recover in the room. Gujarat removed that possibility for a large class of posts. The written mark is the outcome, and the margin between selection and rejection is frequently a fraction of a mark.
The preparation consequence is unglamorous and real: accuracy work — negative marking discipline, elimination technique, question triage — returns more here than at the equivalent stage anywhere with an interview. Class 1 and Class 2 gazetted posts retain their interview; the change is at the tier below.
The Class 1-2 mains is descriptive and bilingual
GPSC runs a common preliminary examination for its Class 1 and Class 2 services and follows it with a descriptive main examination that may be written in Gujarati or English.
The Gujarati option is genuine rather than notional, and candidates schooled in Gujarati medium should use it. Gujarat-specific history, culture and administration carry real weight in the papers, and that material exists in Gujarati in a depth it does not in English.
Reservation, the non-creamy-layer certificate and its clock
Gujarat's reservation categories require certificates issued under state rules, and the non-creamy-layer certificate for socially and educationally backward classes carries a validity period rather than lasting indefinitely.
Candidates lose reserved-category status at verification for the mundane reason that their certificate expired between applying and being called. Check the issue date before you apply, not after you are shortlisted.
Frequently asked questions
Has Gujarat really abolished interviews?
For Class 3 posts and a range of non-gazetted selections, yes — those are decided on written marks alone. Class 1 and Class 2 gazetted recruitment still carries an interview.
Can the GPSC mains be written in Gujarati?
Yes, and it is worth using if you were schooled in Gujarati medium. Gujarat-specific history, culture and administration carry real weight, and that material has more depth in Gujarati than in English.
Why do candidates lose reserved status at GPSC verification?
Usually because the non-creamy-layer certificate expired between applying and being called — it carries a validity period. Check its issue date before you apply.
