Government jobs for OBC candidates 2026 — your age limits, with relaxation applied

Updated

The age column on this page is not the General limit. Every exam below shows the limit as it applies to an OBC-NCL candidate, with the three-year relaxation already added — 47 exams, 26,169 vacancies.

This matters because the limits published everywhere else are the General ones. An OBC-NCL candidate reading a standard listing site sees "18–30" and rules themselves out at 31, when the applicable limit was 33.

This list is everyone's. How many apply to you?

Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

Non-creamy-layer is the whole condition

OBC reservation and OBC relaxation apply only to candidates in the non-creamy layer. Inclusion in the central OBC list is necessary and not sufficient — the income and status test is separate, and it is the part that catches people.

The certificate must be issued in the central government format for central recruitment. A state OBC certificate is not automatically accepted for SSC, IBPS, RRB or UPSC posts, and this is one of the most common rejections at document verification. Candidates who have used their state certificate successfully for state recruitment assume it carries over. It does not.

The validity window is short and it is enforced

Each notification specifies the financial year the non-creamy-layer certificate must cover, and it is usually the current or immediately preceding year. A certificate that was valid when you last applied is very often not valid now.

If it has lapsed, you are assessed as General: no relaxation, no reserved vacancy, no fee waiver. There is no partial credit and no appeal on the basis that the underlying facts have not changed. Renew before the closing date, not before the exam date.

Practical sequence: check the certificate's financial year first, then apply. The renewal takes time at the tehsil office and a form closes on its own schedule.

If you hold more than one entitlement

The +3 is a social category relaxation. Entitlements from other dimensions add on top of it rather than replacing it:

Tick every category you hold in the free check rather than only the main one. It applies the stacking rules per exam and shows the arithmetic behind each limit.

Fee concession is separate from relaxation

Worth knowing because candidates conflate them: in most central recruitment the examination fee is waived for women, SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen — but not for OBC-NCL male candidates, who pay the same fee as General. Age relaxation and reservation apply; the fee waiver generally does not.

Frequently asked questions

How many years of age relaxation do OBC candidates get?

Three years for non-creamy-layer candidates in most central government recruitment. A post with a limit of 30 becomes 33. The relaxation applies only with a valid non-creamy-layer certificate in the central format.

Is a state OBC certificate valid for SSC and IBPS?

Generally no. Central recruitment requires the central government format and inclusion in the central OBC list. A state certificate accepted for state recruitment does not automatically carry over, and this is a frequent rejection at document verification.

What happens if my non-creamy-layer certificate has expired?

You are assessed as General — no age relaxation, no reserved vacancy. The notification names the financial year the certificate must cover, so renew before the closing date rather than before the exam date.

Do OBC candidates get a fee waiver?

Usually not. In most central recruitment the fee is waived for women, SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen. OBC-NCL male candidates pay the General fee while still receiving age relaxation and reservation.
