Government jobs after 32 — the exams that are still open

Updated

29 exams in our catalogue remain open at 32 or later, carrying 6,348 vacancies. The list is shorter than at 28, and pretending otherwise would waste your time — but it is not empty, and two entries on it recruit at enormous scale.

With SC/ST relaxation the ceiling on this list reaches 45. With a disability certificate stacked on top, higher still.

This list is everyone's. How many apply to you?

Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

Where the room actually is

India Post GDS is the outlier and the most important entry here. Its General limit is 40 — well beyond anything else at this level — and it selects on Class 10 marks with no written examination. For a candidate in their mid-thirties who has been out of study for a decade, that combination is unmatched: no syllabus to recover, no coaching to fund, and a decision made on a certificate you already hold.

The railway exams sit at 33 for General, which with OBC-NCL relaxation becomes 36 and with SC/ST 38. RRB NTPC and Group D between them account for most of the volume on this list.

SSC JE runs to 32 and is worth checking if you hold an engineering diploma, because the pay level is materially above the other options here.

What has closed, honestly

UPSC CSE ends at 32 for General candidates, and the attempt cap usually binds before the age limit does. NDA and CDS closed long ago. Bank PO and clerical recruitment stops between 28 and 30. Most State PSCs sit in the same band.

If your plan was UPSC and you are past the window, the useful question is not whether an exception exists — it generally does not — but which of the exams still open leads somewhere you would accept. A Group D or GDS entry with departmental promotion is a real career, and it is available now rather than theoretically.

Check every relaxation you hold before writing anything off

At this age relaxation is not a detail, it is the whole question. The differences are large enough to change which list you belong on:

Run the free check with every category you actually hold ticked. It applies the stacking rules per exam and shows the arithmetic, which is faster and more reliable than reading eight notifications.

Frequently asked questions

Which government exam has the highest age limit in India?

Among the exams in this catalogue, India Post GDS at 40 for General candidates, extending to 43 with OBC-NCL relaxation and 45 with SC/ST.

Can I apply for UPSC after 32?

Not as a General candidate — the limit is 32. OBC-NCL candidates have until 35 and SC/ST candidates until 37, but the attempt cap often binds first: six attempts for General and EWS, nine for OBC, unlimited for SC/ST within the age limit.

Are there government jobs after 35?

India Post GDS remains open to 40 for General candidates and 45 with SC/ST relaxation. Beyond that, most open recruitment has closed, and departmental routes become the realistic path.

Does an expired OBC certificate still get me relaxation?

No. The non-creamy-layer certificate must be valid for the financial year specified in the notification. With an expired certificate you are assessed as General, which at this age often changes the answer entirely.
