The Hindi paper is the real filter

General Hindi is compulsory in the UPPSC mains, and the descriptive papers may be written in Hindi. This is not a formality. It covers grammar, precis writing, letter drafting and vocabulary at a standard that assumes school-level Hindi instruction, and English-medium candidates consistently underestimate it.

Because it is qualifying, it cannot be compensated for by strength elsewhere — failing it ends the attempt regardless of the General Studies scores. If you studied in English throughout, budget real months for this paper rather than treating it as revision.

UP domicile and the reservation structure

The domicile certificate is issued by the Tehsildar or SDM and is generally applied for through the state's e-District portal. It is what gives you access to UP's OBC, SC and ST reservation, the state's age relaxation to 45, and the reduced fee.

Note that UP maintains its own OBC list, which does not match the central list exactly. A caste eligible for central OBC-NCL is not automatically eligible in UP, and the reverse is also true. Check your caste against the state list for state exams and the central list for SSC, IBPS and UPSC — they are separate documents and both are needed if you apply to both.

Plan for a cycle longer than the calendar says

UPPSC's published calendar and its actual schedule have historically diverged, sometimes by many months between notification and final result. This is worth planning around rather than complaining about: candidates who assume a twelve-month cycle and stop applying elsewhere lose a year when the schedule slips.

The practical approach is to treat UPPSC as one of two or three live applications rather than the only one. The high age ceiling makes that easier here than anywhere else — there is time to run parallel attempts.

What the scale actually means for you

UP serves more people than any country in Europe, and its administrative posts carry correspondingly large charges. An SDM in UP administers a population that would be a district capital elsewhere. That is the appeal, and it is also why the competition is what it is — the number of applicants per post is among the highest of any state exam.
