Government jobs in Punjab 2026 — exams, age limits and domicile rules
Punjab requires Punjabi at matriculation standard for state
government appointment. It is not a paper inside the examination that you can be
weak at and still pass — it is an eligibility condition, and a candidate who
never studied Punjabi has to satisfy it separately before appointment.

Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

The Punjabi condition, and when to deal with it
The requirement is a pass in Punjabi at matriculation level or its equivalent. Candidates schooled in Punjab generally have this without thinking about it. Candidates who moved to Punjab, or who studied under a board that did not offer it, do not.
Because it is a condition of appointment rather than of sitting the paper, it is easy to defer and painful to discover late. If it applies to you, clear it while you are still preparing — the qualification is obtainable, but not in the weeks between a result and a joining date.
PCS and the compact cadre
PPSC's Civil Services examination recruits to the Punjab Civil Service (Executive), the police service and allied posts through prelims, mains and a viva. Punjab's cadre is small, so advertised numbers are modest and the competition per post is correspondingly sharp.
PPSC also conducts a large number of departmental recruitments — Naib Tehsildar, Excise and Taxation Inspector, Cooperative Inspector and others — advertised separately from PCS. A candidate tracking only the civil services notification misses most of what the commission actually recruits for in a year.
Reservation and Punjab's own categories
Punjab operates reservation categories defined by state rules, including classifications within the scheduled castes that do not exist in the same form elsewhere, and horizontal reservations for ex-servicemen and sportspersons that are used heavily in practice.
Certificates for these are issued by Punjab authorities and are checked at verification. A certificate from another state establishing the same social category does not carry across, which is the single most common reason a claimed category is rejected here.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know Punjabi for a Punjab government job?
You need a pass in Punjabi at matriculation standard or its equivalent. It is a condition of appointment rather than a paper in the examination, so clear it while preparing — not after a result.
Does PPSC only conduct the PCS examination?
No. It runs a large number of separate departmental recruitments — Naib Tehsildar, Excise and Taxation Inspector, Cooperative Inspector and others — advertised independently of PCS.
Will my reserved-category certificate from another state work in Punjab?
No. Punjab reservation follows certificates issued by Punjab authorities, and a certificate from elsewhere establishing the same social category does not carry across. It is the most common reason a claim is rejected at verification.
