The zonal system decides your real vacancy count
A Telangana notification advertising several hundred posts is not advertising several hundred posts to you. Most are earmarked for local candidates of a particular zone, and only the balance is open across the state.
Localness is established from the candidate's schooling — the districts where the four or seven years of study preceding the qualifying examination were completed — rather than from a residence certificate. Candidates who moved for work, or whose family shifted districts mid-schooling, routinely get this wrong, and getting it wrong means applying against the wrong pool.
The zones were redrawn, and old advice is stale
Telangana redrew its zones after the district reorganisation, replacing the arrangement inherited at the state's formation with a larger number of zones grouped into multi-zones. Guidance written before that change names zones that no longer exist.
Anything you read about Telangana local cadre that refers to the older two-zone structure should be discarded rather than adapted. Work from the current notification's own annexure, which lists the districts in each zone explicitly.
Group 1 and the ceiling that is unusually high
Group 1 recruits Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Commercial Tax Officer, Regional Transport Officer and Mandal Parishad Development Officer, among others, through prelims, mains and interview.
Telangana's upper age limit for direct recruitment is materially higher than the national norm, which makes it one of the few administrative examinations still open to candidates in their forties. For someone who has exhausted UPSC attempts, this is a genuine second career route rather than a technicality — and it is the reason to check the current notification rather than assume the usual mid-thirties ceiling applies.
Language, medium and Urdu
Telangana permits candidates to write in Telugu, English or Urdu in several recruitments, which reflects the state's actual linguistic composition rather than a formality. Urdu-medium candidates in particular have a real option here that they do not have in most of the country.
The medium is declared on the application and is not freely changed later, so it is a decision to make deliberately at the form stage rather than at the desk on examination day.
