Rajasthan-specific content is weighted more heavily than anywhere else

Every state weights its own material. Rajasthan weights it further. History, art, culture, folk traditions, geography, the economy and state polity run through both the preliminary and the main examination, and the culture and folk-tradition content in particular has no equivalent in national study material.

The consequence for a UPSC aspirant is worth stating plainly: national preparation carries you less far here than it does in Bihar or Uttar Pradesh. Budget separate months for Rajasthan-specific study rather than expecting overlap to do the work.

One paper, and what that changes

A single 200-mark objective paper in three hours, with negative marking. Most state exams run two preliminary papers, one of which is merely qualifying, which gives a candidate somewhere to absorb a weak section.

RAS gives you none. The practical effect is that breadth beats depth at this stage — a candidate strong in three areas and blank in two will usually lose to one who is adequate across all five. Plan revision for coverage, not for mastery of favourites.

Final-year students may apply

This is rare among administrative exams and genuinely valuable. A candidate in the final year of a degree can sit RAS, provided the qualification is complete by the stage the notification specifies.

For a 21-year-old that is effectively a free extra attempt: the experience of sitting a real prelims is worth more than any mock, and if it goes well the degree finishes in time anyway. Candidates who wait for the certificate before their first attempt give up a year for nothing.

Domicile, and the women's reservation

The Rajasthan bonafide or domicile certificate is issued by the Tehsildar and unlocks state reservation, age relaxation and the reduced fee. Rajasthan also operates a substantial horizontal reservation for women, applied within each vertical category rather than alongside it — which means a woman in the OBC category competes for OBC posts with the women's quota applied inside that pool, not as a separate list.
