Government jobs after B.Tech in 2026 — and why the obvious choice is the wrong one
An engineering degree qualifies you for 45 exams in our catalogue, carrying
26,169 vacancies. That is only two more than a B.A. graduate
gets — and stating it plainly matters, because the value of a B.Tech here is not
the length of the list.
It is which entry on the list is worth targeting. A B.Tech holder is one of
very few candidates who can choose between the general graduate exams and the
engineering posts, and the competition for those two routes is not remotely
comparable.
Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

Two routes, and most B.Tech graduates take the crowded one
The default is SSC CGL. Everyone takes SSC CGL — arts, commerce, science and engineering graduates all compete for the same posts, because a degree in any discipline qualifies. Your engineering degree gives you no advantage whatsoever in that pool. It is worth exactly as much as a B.A.
SSC JE and RRB JE are the other route, and the eligibility pool is restricted to people holding an engineering diploma or degree in a named discipline. That single restriction removes the overwhelming majority of the candidates you would otherwise face, for posts at a comparable or higher pay level.
This is the whole argument for reading this page rather than the graduate one: your qualification is worth something in exactly one part of the system, and most B.Tech graduates spend their attempts in the part where it is worth nothing.
Your branch decides which JE posts you can sit
Junior Engineer recruitment names disciplines post by post. Civil, Mechanical and Electrical appear on almost every notification; Electronics and Computer Science appear irregularly and for fewer posts.
That is an uncomfortable fact for CSE and IT graduates specifically, and it is better heard now than at document verification: the engineering advantage described above is much stronger for a civil or mechanical graduate than for a computer science one. Check your branch against the post table in the notification itself before planning around it.
You also inherit every diploma-level post
A B.Tech satisfies a diploma requirement, so the technician and JE posts that ask for a three-year diploma are open to you as well. The reverse is not true — a diploma does not satisfy a degree requirement — which means a B.Tech holder has the widest eligibility of any qualification in the system.
The free check knows this. Select "B.E / B.Tech" and it credits you with the diploma-level posts too, which a simple ranking of qualifications gets wrong.
What about PSUs through GATE?
Most public sector undertakings recruit engineers through GATE scores rather than their own written exam, and the pay at entry is materially above the SSC and railway posts on this list. We do not track GATE-based recruitment yet, so it is absent from the table below rather than quietly omitted.
If you are graduating and can sit GATE, sit it. It costs one exam and opens a route that nothing on this page competes with. Treat this list as what is available alongside that, not instead of it.
Frequently asked questions
Is a B.Tech better than a B.A. for government jobs?
For the general graduate exams, no — SSC CGL, IBPS PO and the State PSCs accept any discipline and your engineering degree carries no advantage there. For SSC JE and RRB JE it is decisive, because those posts are closed to non-engineering candidates entirely.
Can a B.Tech holder apply for diploma-level posts?
Yes. A degree satisfies a diploma requirement, so technician and JE posts asking for a three-year diploma are open to you. The reverse does not hold, which gives a B.Tech the widest eligibility of any qualification in this catalogue.
Which B.Tech branches are accepted for Junior Engineer?
Civil, Mechanical and Electrical appear on almost every JE notification. Electronics and Computer Science appear irregularly and for fewer posts, so the engineering advantage is genuinely weaker for a CSE graduate. Check the post table in the notification rather than a summary.
Do you cover PSU recruitment through GATE?
Not yet. Most PSUs recruit engineers on GATE scores rather than their own exam, and we do not track GATE-based recruitment, so it is absent from this list rather than quietly folded in. If you can sit GATE, it opens a route nothing here competes with.
