Government jobs in West Bengal 2026 — exams, age limits and domicile rules

Updated

West Bengal runs one examination where most states run three. A single WBCS paper feeds four separate service groups — A, B, C and D — and they do not share an age band. Group B, the West Bengal Police Service, opens at 20; Groups A and C open at 21; Group D runs to a higher ceiling than the rest. A candidate who reads only the headline age limit will misjudge which groups they are actually competing for.

Your date of birth decides most of it — every exam counts your age on its own cutoff date, not today.

One exam, four groups, four different answers on age

WBCS is a single competitive examination whose successful candidates are allotted to Group A (WBCS Executive and the allied state services), Group B (West Bengal Police Service), Group C (the subordinate services — Co-operative Societies, Labour, Panchayat) or Group D (the junior tier, including Sub- Registrar and Excise).

You choose your group preference on the application form, and the groups carry different age eligibility. Group B opens a year earlier than the rest because the police service recruits younger; Group D closes later. The practical instruction is to read the notification's group table rather than its summary line — a candidate at either end of the band is eligible for some groups and not others, and the form will not tell them.

The Bengali or Nepali paper is not optional

The main examination carries a compulsory language paper in Bengali or Nepali. It is not a token requirement and it is where candidates from outside the state most often come unstuck: the paper expects the ability to write continuous, correct prose, not to recognise the script.

Candidates from the hill subdivisions where Nepali is the language of administration sit the Nepali paper instead. Anyone whose schooling was entirely in another language should treat this paper as a year of preparation in its own right rather than something to revise late.

The optional subject still exists here

Several states have removed optional subjects from their main examination. West Bengal has not, for Groups A and B: an optional subject carries its own papers and its own marking, and the choice materially changes the mains workload.

For a candidate already preparing for UPSC CSE with an optional, this is the strongest argument for attempting WBCS in the same cycle — the overlap is real in a way that it is not in states that have gone fully general-studies.

Residence, and what it does and does not unlock

West Bengal reservation and fee concession follow the state's own certificates, issued through the district administration. Domicile is not what makes you eligible to sit WBCS — the examination is open — but it is what makes the reserved-category vacancies, the relaxed ceiling and the reduced fee available to you.

The language requirement runs separately from residence, and that catches people out in both directions: a long-settled resident who never studied Bengali still faces the language paper, and a Bengali-speaking candidate domiciled elsewhere still competes in the unreserved pool.

Frequently asked questions

How many service groups does WBCS recruit for?

Four — Group A (WBCS Executive and allied services), Group B (West Bengal Police Service), Group C (subordinate services) and Group D (the junior tier). One examination feeds all four, and you give your group preference on the application form.

Do all WBCS groups have the same age limit?

No, and this is the most common misreading of the notification. Group B opens a year earlier than Groups A and C because the police service recruits younger, and Group D runs to a higher ceiling. Read the group table, not the summary line.

Is the Bengali language paper compulsory?

Yes, in the main examination — Bengali, or Nepali for candidates of the hill subdivisions where Nepali is the language of administration. It expects continuous correct prose, so candidates schooled in another language should budget real preparation time for it.

Does WBCS still have an optional subject?

Yes, for Groups A and B, where several states have removed theirs. That makes WBCS unusually compatible with UPSC CSE preparation in the same cycle.
