Government jobs after 12th in 2026: the full list

Career guide Updated · 8 min read

The standard advice after Class 12 is "finish your degree first, then think about government exams". For a lot of people that advice quietly costs three years and a great deal of money, because it treats a degree as a prerequisite when for these particular jobs it is not.

Twelfth-level recruitment runs into lakhs of vacancies every year. Start preparing at 18 and there is a realistic path to being employed by 20 — and then completing a degree afterwards, part-time, while drawing a salary. The alternative route arrives at the same place at 26 or 27, having paid for three years of college in between.

Here is what is actually available, and which one fits which person.

Two numbers in that table deserve attention. Railways allows applications up to 33, which is by a distance the most generous limit at this level and the reason it matters to anyone who has already spent years on other attempts. And India Post GDS has no written examination at all — selection is a merit list built from Class 10 marks. A very large number of eligible people simply do not know that second fact.

Which one suits you

If your English and typing are reasonable — SSC CHSL

The most balanced option at this level. The work is clerical and office-based, postings are usually in cities, and there is a real departmental promotion path afterwards. Note that a typing test is compulsory for most CHSL posts, and it eliminates a surprising number of people who cleared the written stage comfortably. Start fifteen minutes of typing practice on day one of your preparation rather than three weeks before the test.

If you are physically fit — SSC GD Constable

The largest vacancy pool at 12th level, frequently exceeding forty thousand posts in a single cycle. The catch is the age limit: 23 for General category candidates is the tightest window on this list, so the real beneficiaries are people who start immediately after Class 12. If you are already 22, you may have one attempt left, and you should know that before committing a year to it. There is also a physical efficiency test, and the running standard is not negotiable.

If you are over 25 — look at Railways

RRB NTPC and Group D accept applications to 33 for General candidates, and to 36 or 38 with category relaxation. For anyone who believes their age has closed off government recruitment entirely, this is the largest door still open. Railway postings are stable, allowances are reasonable, and internal promotion through departmental examinations is genuinely available.

If you scored well in Class 10 — India Post GDS

Selection is on Class 10 marks alone. No written exam, no interview. If you have 85 percent or above in Class 10, this is a more favourable route than any competitive examination on this list, and the age limit runs to 40. The work is local, often in your own area, and it suits people who cannot relocate.

Does your 12th percentage matter?

For most of these, no. SSC CHSL, GD Constable, MTS, RRB NTPC and Group D require only that you have passed. A candidate with 52 percent and a candidate with 88 percent stand in exactly the same queue, and selection is entirely on the exam.

The exceptions are specific and always spelled out in the notification — certain data entry posts, and roles requiring a stated minimum in Mathematics. If a percentage requirement is not written in the notification, it does not exist.

The flip side is worth stating plainly: because marks do not filter anyone out, the applicant pool at 12th level is enormous. Competition is heavier here than at graduate level, not lighter.

Where people get eliminated late

  • Typing speed. Compulsory for CHSL and data entry posts. It is the single most common late-stage elimination, purely because candidates postpone practising it.
  • Physical standards. Height, chest and running requirements for constable posts. Height relaxations exist for ST candidates; the running standard does not relax.
  • Document mismatches. A name or date of birth that differs between your Class 10 certificate and Aadhaar will surface at verification, not at application. Fix it now — see the document verification guide.
  • Category certificate validity. An OBC-NCL certificate must be valid as on the notification's cutoff date. Expired means you are treated as General, which usually also removes the age relaxation you were relying on.

The strategy that works

In order:

  1. Enrol in a degree immediately through IGNOU or a state open university. It costs little, it does not interfere with preparation, and it is what opens graduate-level exams later.
  2. Prepare once, apply everywhere. CHSL, MTS, NTPC and Group D share most of their syllabus — quantitative aptitude, reasoning, general awareness and English. Filling every form multiplies your chances at no additional preparation cost.
  3. Join whatever comes first. Your first government job is not your last one. Internal departmental exams and lateral moves are real.
  4. Sit SSC CGL once your degree completes, with the security of an existing salary rather than the pressure of unemployment.

That route has you earning at 20 and degree-qualified at 24, ready for a graduate-level post. The conventional route reaches the same point at 26 or 27, with three years of fees and no income in between.

Which of these can you actually apply for?

Frequently asked

Is an Arts stream a disadvantage?
No. Almost every 12th level recruitment specifies "12th pass in any stream". Arts, Commerce and Science candidates are equally eligible and compete on the same exam.
What is the application fee?
SSC exams are typically ₹100, with no fee at all for women, SC, ST, PwD and ex-servicemen candidates. Railway exams charge around ₹500, most of which is refunded to candidates who actually appear for the exam.
Is coaching necessary?
Not for this level. The syllabus is bounded and previous years' papers are freely available. What genuinely decides outcomes is regular mock tests and speed — these papers are rarely conceptually hard, they are short on time.
Can I apply while still in Class 12?
Some recruitments allow candidates awaiting results to apply, others require the certificate at application. Check the specific notification — and note that where it is allowed, there is a firm date by which you must produce proof of passing.
