NMMS Scholarship: The Class 8 Test That Pays for Four Years of School

₹12,000 a year for four years Income up to ₹3.5 lakh MoE Updated
NMMS is the earliest scholarship on this site and, per rupee of effort, one of the most valuable. It pays ₹12,000 a year from Class 9 through Class 12 — four continuous years — to students at government, local-body and aided schools whose families earn under ₹3.5 lakh a year.

It is decided by a selection test conducted by your own state, normally taken in Class 8. Not by board marks, not by an application ranked on merit. If you miss that test, there is no second route into the scheme, and that is the single most important thing on this page.

When to apply

The state selection test is usually held in the winter and the application window on NSP follows the result.

We have not verified this session's dates, so there is no closing date anywhere on this page. Check scholarships.gov.in ↗ for the window that is actually open — a scholarship deadline copied from a website is how students miss the real one.

The deadline that matters is the state test, not the portal

Every other scheme on this site is entered by filing an application on the National Scholarship Portal. NMMS is not. The state education department — the SCERT or an equivalent body — conducts a selection examination, usually in the winter of Class 8, and only students who clear it enter the scheme at all. The portal step comes afterwards, for students who have already been selected.

So the date to find is your state's NMMS test notification, and the place to find it is your state education department's website or your school. Registration typically runs some weeks before the test and closes on a state-specific date that has nothing to do with the NSP calendar.

Schools are the usual route in — most register their eligible students as a body — and that is exactly why it gets missed. A school that does not habitually register loses its whole cohort every year, silently, and no individual family knows the opportunity existed. If your school has not mentioned it by Class 8, ask. The question costs nothing and the answer is worth ₹48,000.

Government, local-body and aided schools only

This is a means-tested scheme with a school-type condition on top: students at private unaided schools are not eligible, regardless of marks and regardless of family income. A high-scoring student at a low-fee private school who would qualify on every other test is outside the scheme.

The rule follows from the scheme's purpose — it exists to stop able students dropping out of the state school system after Class 8 — but it surprises families who assume that need and merit are the only tests. Check your school's status before preparing for the test, not after.

The academic bar is generally 55% in the Class 7 examination, relaxed by 5 percentage points for SC and ST students. That is a threshold to enter the test, not a selection criterion: selection is on the test itself.

What the test contains

The examination is set by the state and its structure is broadly common across states: a Mental Ability Test and a Scholastic Aptitude Test, both objective, together covering reasoning and the Class 7 and 8 syllabus in science, mathematics and social science.

It is not an examination that rewards a year of coaching, and families should not be sold one. What it rewards is familiarity with the format — a thirteen-year-old meeting an objective reasoning paper for the first time on test day loses marks to unfamiliarity rather than to ignorance. Previous years' papers, which states publish, are the entire preparation most students need.

Keeping it for all four years

Selection in Class 8 does not guarantee four years of payment. Continuation depends on your results each year, with the transition from Class 10 to Class 11 normally carrying the highest requirement, and on remaining in an eligible school.

Payment is by direct transfer into the student's own bank account, which for a thirteen-year-old means an account opened with a guardian and seeded with Aadhaar before the first disbursement is due. This is the most common cause of a selected student not being paid, and it has nothing to do with the scheme: get the account opened and seeded as soon as the result is out.

Finally, the arithmetic worth stating to a family deciding whether the test is worth the trouble: ₹12,000 a year for four years is ₹48,000, against a few weekend afternoons with past papers and one Saturday morning examination. Nothing else in Indian school education pays that ratio.

Worth knowing before you apply

Common questions

How is NMMS selection done?
By a selection test conducted by your own state education department, usually in Class 8, with a Mental Ability Test and a Scholastic Aptitude Test. Board marks alone do not get you in, and there is no route into the scheme for a student who missed the test.
Can private school students apply for NMMS?
No. It is restricted to students at government, local-body and aided schools. Students at private unaided schools are outside the scheme regardless of marks or family income.
What is the income limit for NMMS?
₹3.5 lakh a year for the family. The academic bar to sit the test is normally 55% in the Class 7 examination, relaxed by 5 percentage points for SC and ST students.
How much does NMMS pay in total?
₹12,000 a year from Class 9 through Class 12 — ₹48,000 across the four years, provided the continuation conditions on marks each year are met.
Where do I find my state's NMMS test date?
On your state education department or SCERT website, or through your school. It is not announced on the National Scholarship Portal, and most schools register their eligible students collectively.
