Post Matric Scholarship for SC Students: Eligibility, Income Limit and Renewal

Full fees + monthly allowance Income up to ₹2.5 lakh MoSJE Updated
This is the largest scholarship scheme in India by number of students, and the one most often lost through a paperwork error rather than an eligibility one. It pays the tuition fee for a Scheduled Caste student at any recognised course above Class 10 — Class 11 and 12, ITI, diploma, degree, postgraduate, professional — plus a monthly maintenance allowance towards living costs.

There is no age limit, no entrance test and no interview. The two conditions that decide it are a caste certificate and a family income under ₹2.5 lakh a year. Everything else on this page is about keeping it once you have it, which is the harder half.

When to apply

NSP usually opens in the second half of the year and closes before the winter; the exact dates are announced on the portal each session.

We have not verified this session's dates, so there is no closing date anywhere on this page. Check scholarships.gov.in ↗ for the window that is actually open — a scholarship deadline copied from a website is how students miss the real one.

What "full tuition fee" actually covers

The scheme reimburses the compulsory, non-refundable fees your institution charges. In a government college that is usually the whole bill. In a private institution it is not: the amount reimbursable for a self-financing course is capped by the state's fee-fixation committee, and anything the college charges above that cap stays with you.

This is the single most common surprise in the scheme. A student joins a private engineering college charging ₹1.4 lakh a year, is told the scholarship covers "full fees", and discovers that the notified reimbursable fee for that course is ₹60,000. The scholarship worked exactly as written; the expectation did not. Before you commit to a self-financing seat, ask the college which fee head is notified and for how much — in writing.

Refundable deposits, transport and mess charges are outside the fee component everywhere. The maintenance allowance is meant for those, and it is paid at a higher monthly rate to hostellers than to day scholars, in bands that depend on your course group.

The income ceiling counts more than a salary slip

₹2.5 lakh a year, from all sources, for the whole family. Not the applicant's income, not one parent's income, and not salary alone. Agricultural income, rent, pension, interest and a second earner in the household all count. The certificate is issued by a revenue officer — Tehsildar or equivalent — and the designation that is accepted varies by state.

Two practical points. First, an income certificate has a validity, usually one financial year, and a certificate that has expired by the time verification happens is treated as no certificate. Second, the figure on it must be consistent with everything else you file; an income certificate showing ₹90,000 alongside a fee receipt for a ₹3 lakh course invites a query, and a query in this system means months.

Renewal is where the money is actually lost

This scheme is not awarded once for the length of your course. It is awarded for one academic year, and you must renew it every year on the portal. The renewal needs the previous year's result and an attendance record, and it needs your institution to verify both before the window closes.

Renewals fail for reasons that have nothing to do with merit:

  • A backlog paper. Many states require promotion to the next year; a pending subject can hold the renewal even when the year was cleared overall.
  • A gap year. Break the sequence and you are usually applying afresh, not renewing, and fresh applications compete for a fresh year's budget.
  • Your college missing its verification deadline. The application is submitted by you but must be forwarded by the institution's nodal officer, and if that officer does not act, nothing you do on the portal helps. Chase the nodal officer, not the helpdesk.
  • A changed bank account. Payment is by DBT into an Aadhaar-seeded account. Close that account, or leave the seeding stale, and the transfer fails silently.

Every one of these is avoidable and none of them is your merit. Diarise the renewal window the same way you would an exam date.

You cannot hold two central scholarships at once

If you are also eligible for a merit scheme — the Central Sector Scholarship, for instance, if you were in the top 20 percentile of your board — you must choose. Central schemes are not payable together. The right comparison is not which is more prestigious but which pays more over the whole course: a scheme covering full tuition at a professional course is usually worth more than a fixed ₹12,000 a year, and sometimes it is not. Work it out for your actual fee bill.

A state scholarship on top of a central one is a different question and depends on the state's own rules. Ask the state department, not the college office.

Worth knowing before you apply

Common questions

What is the income limit for the SC Post Matric Scholarship?
₹2.5 lakh per year for the whole family, counting every source of income and not salary alone. The income certificate is issued by a revenue officer such as the Tehsildar and is normally valid for one financial year.
Does it cover the full fee at a private college?
It covers the compulsory non-refundable fee up to the amount notified by the state's fee-fixation committee for that course. If your college charges above that notified figure, the difference is yours to pay. Ask the college for the notified reimbursable fee before you take the seat.
Do I have to apply again every year?
Yes. It is awarded for one academic year at a time and renewed on the National Scholarship Portal with the previous year's marks and attendance. Your institution's nodal officer must verify the renewal before the window closes.
Can I hold this and another central scholarship together?
No. Central scholarships are not payable alongside each other, so if you qualify for a merit scheme as well you must choose one. Compare what each is worth across your whole course, not per year.
Why has my scholarship not been credited?
The usual causes are a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded, a change of account since the last payment, or institutional verification still pending. The first two are fixed at your bank; the third only your college's nodal officer can resolve.
