AICTE Pragati Scholarship for Girl Students: Eligibility and the AICTE Approval Check

₹50,000 a year Income up to ₹8 lakh AICTE Updated
Pragati pays ₹50,000 a year to a girl student in the first year of a technical diploma or degree, towards fees, books, equipment and other course costs. The income ceiling is ₹8 lakh a year — by a wide margin the most generous on this page, and high enough that most middle-income families qualify.

It has one condition that decides more applications than the income test does, and it has nothing to do with the student: your institution must be AICTE-approved, and the course must be a technical one. Check that first. Everything else is worth doing only if that is true.

When to apply

Opens after technical admissions close, because it is awarded on first-year admission.

We have not verified this session's dates, so there is no closing date anywhere on this page. Check scholarships.gov.in ↗ for the window that is actually open — a scholarship deadline copied from a website is how students miss the real one.

Check the AICTE list before you check anything else

AICTE approves technical institutions — engineering, technology, management, pharmacy, architecture, applied arts among them — and this scholarship is funded to support students inside that system. A college can be perfectly reputable, state-recognised, university-affiliated and still not AICTE-approved, and a student there is not eligible however strong the rest of the application.

This is not a judgement you can make from the prospectus. AICTE publishes a searchable list of approved institutions with their permitted courses and intake, and the check takes two minutes: find your institution, then confirm that your specific course appears against it. An institution can be approved for some programmes and not others.

Do this before admission if you can. A student choosing between two colleges, one approved and one not, is choosing between ₹50,000 a year and nothing, and that is a real part of the cost comparison that almost nobody makes at admission time.

First year only — this is a door that closes

Pragati is awarded on admission to the first year of a diploma or degree. There is a defined entry point and it does not reopen: a second-year student who did not apply in first year cannot start a fresh claim, and a student admitted laterally into the second year of a degree on the strength of a diploma generally has a separate, narrower route rather than the standard one.

Once you hold it, it continues through the course subject to the renewal conditions — passing your years and maintaining attendance. So the whole value of the award, four years of it for a degree, is decided by whether one application was filed in one window at the start.

If you are reading this having just taken admission, that window is now. If you are reading it in second year, check the scheme page for the lateral-entry provisions before assuming nothing applies.

Two girls per family, and what that means in practice

The scheme supports up to two girl children in one family. It was designed that way deliberately: the intent is to make it possible for a family to educate more than one daughter in a technical field, which is precisely the point at which household budgets start forcing a choice.

The practical implications are worth stating plainly. Sisters do not compete with each other for one award — both can hold it. A third daughter is outside the scheme. And the family declaration is a document that will be checked, so the position should be stated accurately at application rather than corrected later.

₹8 lakh is generous, and the certificate still has to be right

At ₹8 lakh a year the ceiling admits families that no other scheme on this page would consider — the SC post-matric scheme stops at ₹2.5 lakh and the OBC one at ₹1.5 lakh. If you have been discouraged by income limits elsewhere, read this one again.

The certificate rules do not relax with the ceiling. Income is counted for the whole family from all sources, the certificate comes from the competent revenue authority in the prescribed format, and it must be current for the relevant financial year. A generous limit with a stale certificate fails the same way a tight limit does.

If you also hold a disability certificate, read Saksham before deciding. It is worth the same amount under the same ceiling, but it is not restricted by gender and its conditions are proved differently — one certificate rather than a family declaration. You may hold one of the two, not both.

Worth knowing before you apply

Common questions

Who is eligible for the AICTE Pragati Scholarship?
Girl students admitted to the first year of a technical diploma or degree course at an AICTE-approved institution, with family income up to ₹8 lakh a year. There is no category condition and no age limit.
How do I know if my college is AICTE-approved?
AICTE publishes a searchable list of approved institutions with the courses each is approved for. Find your institution and confirm your specific course appears against it — an institution can be approved for some programmes and not others.
Can I apply in my second year?
Not through the standard route. Pragati is awarded on admission to the first year and does not reopen later. Students admitted laterally into the second year on a diploma should check the scheme page for the separate provision that applies to them.
How many girls from one family can receive it?
Up to two. Sisters do not compete with each other — both can hold the award at the same time.
What does the ₹50,000 cover?
It is paid towards fees, books, equipment, software and other course-related costs rather than reimbursing one specific fee head, which makes it more flexible than the post-matric schemes.
